Before 8:00 AM Wednesday, February 2, 63–year–old Gina Kay Cunningham of Fontanelle Court, San Jose, was taking her trash down to the street and was struck by a California Waste Solutions truck. According to San Jose police, Ms. Cunningham may have run into the driver’s blind spot. She succumbed to massive multiple blunt force injuries to her torso. 

This is the 8th pedestrian death in San Jose car accidents in 2022, and the 11th total fatality. In 2021, the same mark was not reached until June.

What we know about the Fontanelle Court Pedestrian Fatality

• Gina Kay Cunningham was struck at approximately 8:00 AM on Wednesday, February 2, 2022.

• She was struck by a California Waste Solutions truck.

• One fatality has been reported.

• Ms. Cunningham was in the process of taking out her garbage when she was struck and killed.

• At the time, Ms. Cunningham may have been in the driver’s blind spot according to San Jose police.

• No evidence of alcohol or drugs has been discussed as a possible cause.

• No evidence mentioned that the collision was an intentional act.

• Line of sight conditions and determinations may have played a roll in the collision.

• Investigators will take a closer look at several possible causes including visibility, line of sight issues, brake failure, mechanical issues, distracted driving and beyond.
